University Blaise Pascal

Our university is called “Université Blaise Pascal”, after the great scientist from Clermont-Ferrand. He is known for his contributions in the fields of science, medicine, and philosophy. He has worked on many subjects such as scientific methodology, belief in God, measuring atmospheric pressure. He was also one of the creators of the mechanical calculator.

The university is divided in several sites: one called “Gergovia” (Gergovie is the name of a hill and the place where Vercingétorix, a Gallic chief, won upon Julius Cesar) where you can study literature, languages in a literary field, and human sciences and another one, ours, called “Carnot” which welcomes some classes from Gergovia but which principally welcomes us, students of Lettres Etrangères Appliquées.

Carnot itself is divided in 3 buildings: the main building is the building Carnot. It is composed of a lot of classrooms for tutorials classes and of some amphithéâtres with about 200 seats. Then we have the Manège, a complex of classrooms for tutorials only. What is surprising are the glass-made walls and roofs of all rooms. The third and last building is named “Paul Collomp” who was… It is composed of several amphitheaters and classrooms, there is a pole for the students' course choice where we are advised on the different careers we are interested in. It is also the building where we have this OLP class and oral English classes in the Laboratoire de Langues.

During WW2, university Carnot welcomed the University of Strasbourg, a French city in the North-East of France, which was occupied by the Germans. In 1943, 500 students and professors were arrested during a roundup and 130 people deported. The University got a medal in 1947 for its involvement in the Resistance.
